Washington Photo Blog 5: Pt. Defiance Zoo

DSC_0192
We spent yesterday (Thursday) at Point Defiance Zoo with my other Grandma and Grandpa. (My mom's parents are divorced so both sets of grandparents in Washington are my maternal grandparents.) My Uncle Tim met us there later.

In the Kids' Zone, we spotted lemurs, meercats, a peacock, a pygmy owl, and a couple of kids.

The kids loved the slide and the splash pad, even though it was only around 70 degrees. They never even acted like they were cold.

Zoe and Thomas got to feed and groom the goats.

"Fish are friends, not food!"
We went the aquarium area where we spotted a bunch of our favorite characters from Finding Nemo.

The Asian area had elephants, gibbons, siamangs, and tapirs. We see the gibbons and siamangs (also a kind of gibbon) at the Nashville Zoo, but they are generally swinging high up in the trees. We got to see them sitting in hammocks very close to the glass here! Also, Nashville Zoo has African elephants while Pt. Defiance has Asian elephants.

The Budgie Buddies were a big hit. Zoe loved feeding them. Thomas was a little more unsure about them, but he eventually helped Mimi feed them.

This falcon flew over and posed for me.

We saw a walrus, seals, and sea otters. I caught the walrus blowing into the water.

The arctic foxes started off in the back of their enclosure, but when my mom started making noises at them so they would look at us, they moved to the very front. One of them looked like it wanted to pounce.

We got to the polar bear exhibit at the perfect time! They were just heading towards the water when we went to the above-ground part but then went underwater to be fed. We headed to the underwater viewing area, and you can see how close to the polar bears Zoe and Uncle Tim were! When I pulled up the photo of the polar bears, Thomas said, "Fish!" because he remembered that they were eating fish when we saw them.

After we saw the polar bears, we started to head towards the exit. On our way we saw the reindeer and the oomingmak.

We had to take a short break on our way to the exit because Grandma was tired.

One last animal encounter! Zoe thought the armadillo was very cool and did not want to leave. Thomas screamed when the handler brought it close. I wish I had captured a better picture of that! Afterwards if you said, "Armadillo," he would say, "Bug! On me!"

The kids rode the carousel at the very end of our zoo trip.
