But Not The Hippopotamus is one of my favorite books to read to my kids. I love Sandra Boynton's use of rhythm and rhyme. More importantly, I love the story of the lonely, left-out hippopotamus who is finally included in the fun. It's a good lesson for both sides. If you have a great group of friends, be on the lookout for those who may be in need of a friend. If you're the one who is left-out, join in when you're asked! Others often aren't intentionally excluding you; they just may be oblivious because they are too wrapped up in their own worlds.
